Casey’s Corner Gluten-Free Hot Dogs
Finding gluten-free foods at quick service restaurants at Walt Disney World is not as hard as many people think. In fact, Disney is one of the best places in the world for people who have special dietary needs, such as food allergies, paleo, keto, vegan, or vegetarian diets. In this blog, we are going to discuss Casey’s Corner gluten-free hot dogs as well as their plant-based slaw dog.
On a recent visit to Casey’s Corner in the Magic Kingdom, they had a special Corned Beef Hash Hot Diggity Dog that looked very intriguing. For those who are not gluten-free, corn dog nuggets are also available. French fries throughout the Disney properties contain soy, so should not be ordered by people with a soy allergy. Of course, this does not pertain to freshly made fries that you might be able to get at some table service restaurants. Fryers at Casey’s Corner are cross-contaminated with dairy, gluten, egg, soy, and corn.
If you have dietary concerns, you can ask to speak with an allergy coordinator at Casey’s Corner, as well as look at the dietary book that contains images of all the ingredient lists. I chose to do both the double check my options in hopes of maybe getting a paleo meal. Of course, that would mean omitting the gluten-free bun, which would have been the better choice, since I left most of it over, anyway. I am not a huge fan of gluten-free buns as I find them very dry.
I will say this, many of the locations are beginning to use Local Oven products, and the gluten-free hot dog bun was better than some others. The ingredients at the time of review included:
- Rice milk
- White rice flour
- Potato starch
- Tapioca flour
- Dehydrated egg whites
- Canola oil
- Eggs
- Sugar
- Yeast
- Salt
- Xanthan gum
As you can see, the Local Oven allergy-friendly hot dog bun is not safe for anyone with an egg allergy.
Casey’s Corner Gluten-Free Hot Dogs – Regular and Foot-Long Are Not the Same
The next think I want to point out is that there is a considerable difference between the regular and foot-long Casey’s Corner gluten-free hot dogs. Do not order a foot-long thinking you are getting the same hot dog as the regular. Even the coordinator did not know this until I pointed it out. That is why I cannot stress enough looking at the ingredient lists yourself.
At the time of ordering, the regular hot dog was from Buckhead Pride, and was an all-natural, uncured beef hot dog. No nitrates other than those occurring naturally in sea salt are added to this product. The ingredients in Casey’s Corner gluten-free hot dogs are:
- Beef
- Water
- Sea salt
- Less than 2% of natural flavorings, vinegar, sugar, yeast extract, paprika, sunflower oil
The footlong hot dogs contained nitrates and an extensive list of ingredients.
I ordered a gluten-friendly version of the Corned Beef Hash Hot Diggity Dog, omitting the crispy potatoes and Blarney Sauce Drizzle. The Blarney Sauce contains dairy, gluten, egg, soy, and corn – many ingredients I avoid. Unfortunately, essentially every part of this hot dog contains sugar, something not allowed on a paleo or keto diet. I did ask for some sauerkraut on the side and was brought it from the back to avoid cross-contamination from the toppings bar. The hot dog was enjoyable, but not necessarily a dish I would order again. I rarely (once or twice a year at most) eat hot dogs, even the healthiest kinds. Consider this my exception for this review.
For those vegans or vegetarians looking for a plant-based option, Casey’s Corner has you covered. The Plant-Based Slaw Dog at the time of this writing was from Beyond Sausage. Ingredients include:
- Water
- Pea protein isolate
- Coconut oil
- Sunflower oil
- Natural flavor
- 2% or less of rice protein, faba bean protein, protein starch, salt, fruit and vegetable juice (for color), apple fiber, methylcellulose, citrus extract (to protect quality), calcium alginate casing
The pickled slaw contains:
- Cabbage
- Granulated sugar
- Kosher salt
- White onions
- Fresh cilantro
- Shredded rainbow carrots
- Kale
There are also sauces included in this hot dog, so please double check the ingredient book when you go if you have other dietary or allergy concerns as soy might be an issue for some people.
All in all, Casey’s Corner gluten-free hot dogs make an acceptable option for people looking for a quick and relatively healthy alternative.
