Primo Piatto Allergy-Friendly Breakfast
The Disney World Resort in Orlando has a new, exciting place to call “home” when you visit – Disney’s Riviera Resort. We decided to check it out twice on our recent visit – only weeks after it opened. Arriving by car for dinner was not a problem, but a few days later, when we went for breakfast, we could not park there. Instead, we drove over to one of the other “Skyliner” resorts to park. That may not always be an option, but parking at Hollywood Studios or Epcot would also work as you can catch the Skyliner there, as well. Our Monday morning review of our Primo Piatto allergy-friendly breakfast is below. In this review, we look at options for paleo, keto, gluten-free, and other allergies.
Primo Piatto is the Riviera Resort’s quick-service restaurant. To get to it, you either walk through the resort, around a corner, and down a long hall. Eventually, you will arrive at this sign that lets you know a delicious meal is ahead.
However, if the weather is nice, take a walk outside where you will find this amazing view. Although you cannot see it, to the right, there is a giant chessboard. There were always people playing so we chose not to take the photos this visit. To the left, there are other lawn games which were also in use.
Before entering the restaurant for our Primo Piatto allergy-friendly breakfast, we were able to look at these menus on the wall to get an idea of the offerings. The first one shows the main entrees, including breakfast pizzas and specialty items.
The second sign showed the kid’s meals and beverages. Yes, there are even a few cocktails for the adults who want to start the day off feeling relaxed.
The third sign listed the Specialty Coffees offered by Primo Piatto (whipped cream or flavored syrups available for a 50-cent upcharge).
Primo Piatto Allergy-Friendly Breakfast Menu
The Primo Piatto allergy-friendly breakfast menu may not seem to contain that many gluten-friendly options at first glance. However, that is not the case – as always, ask to speak with one of the AMAZING chefs at the restaurant. I highlighted the word amazing because both Chef Carroll in the morning, and Chef Christopher a few nights before, were beyond wonderful. They were both extremely informative, helpful, friendly, and accommodating – everything and more that we expect from our Disney chefs.
Because we went during a quiet time in the later evening hours, Chef Christopher had plenty of time to tell us about both the morning and day and nighttime offerings. That was a good thing because they were extremely busy in the morning. Even so, Chef Carroll was incredible – I was able to speak with her later on at the counter while she was preparing meals. Watching her in action was like watching a symphony – every person moved as if part of a well-orchestrated event.
Although the breakfast pizzas are not listed as being gluten-free, you can get them prepared on Udi’s pizza crusts. Substitutions on any menu item are possible. The Blueberry-Lemon Pancakes (a house specialty) can be made with Namaste pancake mix – however, do not expect them to be the same. More on that later.
As with the rest of Disney World, Primo Piatto uses Quaker Oats. When I asked about the chocolate granola being gluten-free, since it says it on the menu for the Acai Yogurt – WARNING – it is not a 100% gluten-friendly item as it is made with the Quaker Oats. I was told that Disney follows FDA guidelines when it comes to oats and their classification as gluten-free. It is hopeful that someday, Disney will make the switch to purchasing oats that are certified gluten-free. This is a reminder of why it is always essential to speak with a chef.
In place of the everything bagel, Primo Piatto offers a gluten-free option with Kinnikinnick bagels. The restaurant also provides Bloomfield Farms bread and burger buns, making it possible to enjoy a Croque Madame or other breakfast sandwich. Checking out Bloomfield Farms website, their products are also free of dairy, egg, nut, and soy – making them an excellent choice for many food allergies. Of course, they are not paleo or keto options as they contain potato flour, corn starch, rice, and many other ingredients not on those diets. You can find a link to purchase or check out Bloomfield Farms bread at the bottom of this review.
Primo Piatto Allergy-Friendly Breakfast – Our Selections
I really like the fact that the Primo Piatto allergy-friendly breakfast has a nice variety of items. When you first enter the restaurant, you come to the cashier where you will place your order. This is also where you will ask to speak with a chef. We stepped off to the side while we waited for the chef to come out from the kitchen. I also like the fact that the kitchen is open, and you can watch them preparing the food. It also made it easy after I ate for me to go and ask the chef questions without her having to leave her station again.
Chef Carroll and I discussed two meals – the Breakfast Platter of Scrambled Eggs, that comes with bacon, Italian sausage, a sweet brioche roll, and creamy mascarpone polenta, and the Plant-based Scramble Bowl, that comes with grilled vegetables and Italian-style sausage. Being that I wanted to make this a completely paleo meal, we swapped out the roll and polenta from the Breakfast Platter and replaced them with the grilled vegetables from the Plant-based bowl. This dish also works for those on a keto diet.
As you can see in the photo above, the presentation was beautiful. If you are wondering where the eggs are, they are underneath the baby greens. I really wish I would have thought to uncover them and take a photo – they were the most perfectly scrambled eggs I have ever had. Luckily, Chef Carroll told me the trick – low and slow – and I have been making them that way ever since. I will tell you that this was one of the best quick service breakfasts I have ever had – and very filling.
My son decided to make our last meal on property his one cheat meal, as he is typically gluten-free. After hearing that the Lemon-Blueberry pancakes were a house specialty, he had to try them. Although they could be made with the Namaste mix, Chef Christopher told us they would not be the same as the pancakes have a cake-like consistency.
As you can see, the dish comes with two delicious sausages and three very small pancakes. While it may not seem that way, the pancakes were filling. It was an extremely tasty dish. However, if you really want to know if it is a worthy cheat, the answer is no. I wish we would have also ordered this dish gluten-free to compare.
I will tell you that I spoke with a family who had already eaten breakfast there a few times. While the Croque Madame looked pretty good, the person eating it said it was just ok. However, I was told that the Cinnamon Crumble ‘French Toast’ Bread Pudding was so good that it was a repeat contender. So, if you are looking for a breakfast cheat, that would be the right choice. This Primo Piatto allergy-friendly breakfast option is good if you are looking for a nut and soy-free meal.
Primo Piatto also has quick-grab options that we will cover in another. You can read our Primo Piatto dinner review here.
