Satu’li Canteen: Tofu Bowl
There are many great places to eat in Animal Kingdom. One of my favorites, for a smaller meal or a larger one, is in Pandora. Pandora immerses guests into a completely new world, including within their dining. My Satu’li Canteen tofu bowl was one of the best quick service meals I have had on Disney property.
Satu’li Canteen is themed with Pandora atmosphere in mind, making this a great healthy option for those looking for tasty alternatives to traditional theme park dining.
What makes this food location so unique is its use of building your own bowl – all with exceptionally healthy options. As you can see below, there are plenty of options on the allergy friendly menus. Having recently gone gluten-free, I love the fact that I have so many choices.
You start by picking your protein. Well, I am not the biggest protein eater other than my red meat or salmon once a week for iron, so I decided to choose the chili-spiked crispy fried tofu. This Satu’li Canteen tofu bowl was an excellent choice.
Mind you, I am not a vegetarian and do not eat tofu often at all, but I thought I would be adventurous and try it. Other protein options are wood-grilled chicken or slow roasted sliced grilled beef which is beautifully lean and tender and a bit pink. Next, you pick your base. I went pretty basic here, knowing I could not go wrong with mixed whole grain and rice. Other base options are quinoa and vegetable salad, red and sweet potato hash, and romaine and kale salad.
Last, you pick your sauce. Now, initially looking at this menu, a lot is foreign and things I typically would not order. However, I say try new things and be adventurous, so I chose the charred onion chimichurri sauce instead of the creamy herb dressing which I assume would be delicious on the romaine and kale salad or the quinoa and vegetable salad.
Portion size is large at the canteen, so it can be a big meal for the day. I was not too hungry and only wanted enough food to hold me until the next park I visited. So, I ordered mine as a kid’s meal. This was an excellent choice! It was perfectly portioned, excellent for a snack or a light meal until later in the day.
The tofu was coated with crispy chili, texture wise it was a little bit foreign for me, never having had tofu that had been fried. It definitely was not bland at all and had a smidge of a kick to it. They provided a significant amount, so there was not any shortage. While the texture was interesting to wrap my mouth around, it was very good. The adding of the chimichurri ties the whole meal together in my opinion. It comes on the side, so you can pour as much or as little as wanted on it. However, I say pour it all! It is rich and adds a wonderful compliment to any combination.
My biggest advice for anyone eating at Satu’li is to be adventurous and not let unfamiliar food scare you off because it is a great, healthy alternative that just may surprise you. Try the Satu’li Canteen tofu bowl – you will not be disappointed.
