Harambe Market Light Lunch
My go-to lunch spot at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is Satu’li Canteen. However, this day I was really craving some ribs but did not want a lot to eat. Since I was heading over towards Kilimanjaro Safaris, I figured I would stop off for a Harambe Market light lunch. Of course, it would have to be gluten-friendly, and
For those who do not know, Disney uses the term gluten-friendly instead of gluten-free. The special dietary menus are called allergy-friendly menus. If you have celiac or another condition that would cause problems with cross-contamination, you may do best with full-service restaurants. While the quick-service counter restaurants do usually have separate preparation areas, there is still a tiny risk that may also stem from the providers of the ingredients.
Harambe Market consists of 4 different walk-up windows. At Kitamu Grill, you can get chicken tenders. Wanjohi Refreshments will quench your thirst with sangria, beer, soft drinks, coffee, hot cocoa, specialty drinks (non-alcoholic and alcoholic), and more. If you are in the mood for a pork sausage with curried onion relish, make your way to Famous Sausages. For me, it was a visit to the counter at Chef Mwanga’s for my spice-rubbed ribs.
Gluten-Friendly Ribs at Harambe Market
My Harambe Market light lunch was actually a child’s meal – and it’s a good thing. I could not even eat all the meat that came on those few ribs. I do not remember the last time I had such meaty ribs. The ribs are a fairly decent choice for someone on a paleo or keto diet. They are gluten-friendly, and if sugar is a concern, you can omit the barbecue sauce, as I did.
Adult rib meals come with green papaya slaw and black-eyed pea salad. I chose not to get the slaw due to the sugar, canola oil, and rice vinegar – all no-no’s for the paleo diet. For the kids’ meal version, you will receive apple wedges, carrot sticks, and a small beverage (
Although the ribs may not look as appetizing without the barbecue sauce, I can assure you they tasted amazing. There was no fat and more meat than I could eat. If you, like me, do not like to overeat, then ordering a child-sized portion is the best option. My Harambe Market light lunch hit the spot.
The menu has changed at Harambe Market since my visit. You can access it through this link to Disney’s website. The allergy-friendly offerings are considerably more than before – do not worry, the ribs are still there. I am extremely excited to go and check out the new options on my next trip.
